GIANT MICROBES MERS (MERS-CoV) Middle East Respiratory Syndrome The first known case of MERS was identified in a patient in Saudi Arabia in mid 2012. Global concerns about a new c0r0navirus were warranted as there were soon limited, but severe, outbreaks in several countries, many close to the Arabian Peninsula. A ggressive contact tracing seemed to show links back to that region for other outbreaks, which popped up farther away. This virus is believed to have originated in bats. The human strain of this infection is more closely related to that found in camels, which was passed on to humans through close contact. There is still no specific vaccine or treatment, even as research continues. The risk to the general population is relatively low, which is a VERY good thing, considering the mortality rate is around 35%. So, you might want to think twice before kissing that camel on your next vacation, even if you think it might make for a KEWL SELFIE!
